The images go from top to bottom the top one having the smallest F/stop while the bottom one has the largest F/stop.

In the one that has the smallest f/stop you can see how the background (the grey part of the wall separating the wall from the floor) is not to well in focus. As you move along the background get sharper and by the final one the background is very defined and in focus.
In order to achieve this every time I would move the f/stop I would count to see how many times stops I moved it, then I would a just the shudder speed accordingly the the amount of stops, making for the same exposure.  found the most effective image was the last even though there isn't much i the background if there was I find it would give you a better sense of the scene, rather than just having the object.

F/stop 1.4
Shudder 1/640
ISO 100

F/stop 16
Shudder 1/100
ISO 400

When the background is sharper it tends to give the image more of a story rather then it being just a portrait, since we get the person as well as the location, and not just the person with a blurry background.
